While getting ready for work one morning, I was listening to a minister on TV as he talked about Jesus’ admonition to Martha. Jesus was speaking words of life to those gathered around, while Martha was consumed with the preparation of the meal. She was upset that her sister Mary wasn’t helping. Instead, Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to His every word. But when Martha asked Jesus to have Mary come help her, Jesus said, “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” The minister’s question was, “What if Martha had also chosen to sit and listen to Jesus? Who would have provided dinner for the group?” The minister maintained they could have eaten from the banquet table of heaven – just like the feeding of the five thousand. Now that is totally out there, and completely foreign to our humanly way of thinking.
But if you think about it, most of what Jesus said is foreign to our way of thinking. Were we to really believe what Jesus said, and live as Jesus lived, we’d appear as aliens to the world around us!
If you’ve ever seen an episode of the ‘Mork and Mindy’ show, it’s similar to the dilemma in which a true Christian finds himself. Mork was from another planet, and in order to function on the Earth, his old way of thinking and doing had to change. The entire series was about him adapting to the earth’s way of doing things, just so people wouldn’t know he was an alien. Although there are similarities between Mork’s situation and that of a Christian, there are vast differences.
Mork was told to conform and fit in with this world, Christians are told not to do so. “And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” (Rom 12:2). There is to be no blending in. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord…” (2 Cor. 6:17).
Mork was not to use the resources and powers available from his world, but to rely solely on the physical, material resources of the earth. But Christians are to rely on the resources of Heaven. Whenever Jesus came upon a need, He called upon His Father in Heaven for the supply. If He came upon the sick, He healed them. If He came upon the hungry, He fed them. Jesus wasn’t limited by this physical, earthly realm. And if you’re a born-again, begotten child of God, neither will you be limited to this physical, material realm. You are now a citizen of Heaven!
We are Christ’s ambassadors and represent the Kingdom of Heaven. Just as Jesus did, we too are to utilize and depend upon the resources provided by the Kingdom we represent. Jesus said, “Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these…” (John 14:12). So as we go about our Father’s business, and come upon the sick or hungry, we too will call upon our Father in Heaven to supply whatever is needed.
So if you really believe what Jesus said, “Seek you first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things will be added unto you,” you’d have to agree with the minister’s comment regarding Martha. If Martha had also chosen to sit at Jesus’ feet, to feed upon the Word of God, she could have eaten from the banquet table of heaven. Jesus knew that if she chose to seek first the Kingdom of God, she could depend upon the resources of that very Kingdom to supply her every need.
Yes, it’s so very alien for us to think this way. But as we feed on the Word of God, we’ll be set free from the confines of this physical realm; and free to receive from the bounty of Heaven itself! We’ll adapt to the heavenly way of doing things. And just as Jesus said concerning His followers, we will do what He did. As He is, so are we in this world.
So, there you have it. Christians are not of this world. They are humans that have been impregnated with the Seed of Life from the Kingdom of Heaven. They’re now other worldly beings. That’s why, as they transform into the image and likeness of this other world, they’re so easy to spot. Everything they say and do will identify them as the aliens they are. With all this said, I have a confession to make:
I’m an alien! I might as well just say it and get it out. Personally, I’m becoming more and more aware of the fact that what I’m thinking and feeling is diametrically opposite of the ways of this world. I’m conscious of the fact that what has been growing on the inside of me is getting so large that it’s starting to manifest in what I say and do. So it won’t be long now before I’m easily spotted as the alien I am! What’s more:
If You’re a Christian, You’re an Alien Too!
To Him Be the Glory!
